Ade’s Special Outfit

An authentic story and vibrant picture book showcases the beautiful culture and clothing of the Yoruba people of West Africa as a young boy celebrates his birthday.

It’s young Ade’s birthday and his grandmother is coming from Nigeria to celebrate. What should he wear for his big day? When Nana arrives after her long journey from Africa, she brings special clothing for him to wear to his party. Ade learns all about the many beautiful and colorful pieces of his new outfit and their special Yoruba names. He is all set to celebrate in style! Through colorful depictions of various clothing pieces and definitions of their Yoruba names, young readers will enjoy a fun story while learning a variety of words in the Yoruba language and the significance of Ade’s celebration outfit.

With Ade’s Special Outfit, families and educators of young children will welcome an
opportunity to invite a dialogue about Yoruba culture and promote cultural diversity at home and in the
classroom.
Understanding and embracing diversity at an early age through culturally and developmentally appropriate learning environments or support in the home helps to increase in children an awareness, appreciation, and inclusion of beliefs and cultures other than their own, setting kids up for greater personal and educational success.
